Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has begun conducting sea trials of the future ROKS Dosan Ahn Changho, the first KSS-3 submarine destined for the South Korean Navy.
The sea trial period began on June 10 and is expected to last up until the submarine’s commissioning, which is tentatively scheduled for December 2020. First to be tested were the submarine’s steering and propulsion systems.
The future Dosan Ahn Changho will be capable of firing both cruise and ballistic missiles, hence making it the first missile-capable attack submarine to be built in South Korea. It will also be armed with an improved variant of the locally-built Baek Sang Eo (“White Shark”) torpedo.
